I am President and Co Founder of Morning Starr Animal Shelter in AZ. I do not claim to have it all together nor do I have answers for all the irresponsible pet owners who want to "get rid" of their ferrets. I have found however that we do not do these guys any favors by taking them in if we cannot afford to give them the best food, cages, vet care and time that we can. I always offer to help people find homes for their ferrets by putting them on our website or petfinder. Sometimes all they need is direction as to how to interview a prospective new home for their little ones. I have found that we are at our limit for giving ferrets the best of everything while they are with us at 50 max. We have stopped taking in surrenders and only accept emergencies, which happen often enough. A building is probably not the answer as these little guys need 24/7 supervision, which can be expensive and hard to find. I know that I do not leave home very often because of the responsibility to the ferrets so I can imagine how overwhelming this is for this ferrets unlimited shelter person. She is however the maker of her own demise. I saw the same thing at a horse rescue we visited once. They were proud to say that they never refused a horse 24/7 but when you saw the small corrals stuffed with horses fighting for food and many in need of vet care, which they could not afford, you realized that they were doing the animals no favors by saying yes to all. I believe it might be best for her to downsize her rescue to what she can manage and send some of the ferrets to as many rescues who can take them as possible. I am not judging but only trying to share my experience in rescue work to help others. I hope this message is taken in the same heart felt manner, for these ferrets sake, as it is given.
