A dog is a dog, and will sometimes do the unthinkable. Last year I read Alexandra's article in Ferrets magazine. She wrote about her ferret Switch The Kit, and the encounter with two dogs. Alex wrote, *my dog didn't kill Switch, but she wanted to*. I have two big dogs, both sweet and loving. They do doggie things, chase squirrels and bunnies from the back pasture, and keep the neighbors cat out of *their* yard. One day I had the ferrets in their playpens on the front porch. My hubby and I sat reading, the dogs were laying nearby. Such a peaceful Sunday afternoon. Suddenly we heard ferret screams as Parris had gotten a hold of Isabella through the bars of the pen. I turned to see my Black Lab stand up, then go over the pen in one smooth leap. I followed him in, yelled his *leave it* command, and grabbed his muzzle. No ferret. Good boy Beau, good dog! There I was with one excited dog that weighs nearly what I do on top of three ferrets, one screaming. Another big dog outside the pen, wanting in. I thought of Alexandra and her sweet Allis Chompers. I remembered Switch. Hubby was home, he would not have been during the week. I would have been alone, inside the pen with this 97 pound dog, 7 ferrets, and no way to get them separated without ferrets escaping to the excited barking dog outside the pen. I learned a lesson the hard way. I will always be thankful it turned out the way it did. My sweet dogs are..... dogs. I cannot expect them to never do doggie things. Ardith [Posted in FML issue 5165]
