If shipping standards are set at 8 wks AND require surgical incisions to be fully healed, isn't it possible breeders just won't alter kits, leaving it up to pet stores & owners to do? If that is a possibility isn't it likely MORE communities may ban ferrets to prevent release of unaltered ferrets into the wild? I wish it were possible to require breeders & pet stores to adminster initial distemper & rabies vacines on age appropriate schedules. I know the USDA regs can't require pet stores to, which ticks me off when I saw my local PetSupermarket.com with TWO 5 m.o. ferrets who STILL hadn't had their full series of distemper/rabies. But is it possible to require breeders to vaccinate on schedule before shipping; so if the breeder still has the kit at age 9 wks (or whatever the standard veterinarian reccomendation is) they have to give a 2nd distemper shot before shipping? I'm not up on the debate, has this idea been discussed at all? "Intelligence is like 4-wheel drive. It allows you to get stuck in more 'remote' places." ~ Garrison Keillor ~ [Posted in FML issue 4982]
