One of our oldsters has had an ongoing chronic diarrhea problem for
close to a year. We tried everything from flagyl and amoxi to pepto and
even pred for inflammation. The diarrhea would come and go but just
recently it was more coming than going and he also began losing weight.
This warranted a trip to our great shelter Dr. Thomazin in Bellevue,
and problem was solved. He suspected colitis based on his history of
symptoms and treatment and prescribed Albon - which I had only given to
our foster cats for coccidia. Apparently, Albon is a sulfa drug, and
sulfa drugs such as Asacol is used in humans for colitis. Albon is also
said to be very safe. Within 2 days, Jonathan's diarrhea had completely
cleared up. Our course of treatment is to administer for 5-7 days AFTER
he has consistently formed stools. He has now been diarrhea free for
almost a week and has felt better than he has in months.
