You know, first, not everyone who buys a ferret from a pet store ends up
giving it up.
 
Second, instead of telling PetSmart not to sell ferrets, which they
probably won't do, way not work with them Express your concerns.  Then
ask if they would be willing to hold ferret adoption days OR ferret
education days.  They might not go for the adoption, but they might
for the education.  Offer to bring in ferrets and tell customers about
ferrets.  Show them what to buy, what to feed them, recommend good
vets, etc.
 
While I understand shelter owners being upset, being confrontational and
not trying to find a work-around isn't going to help.
