I have a three to four year old ferret that came into my rescue with adrenal problems. A few days prior to his scheduled surgery, he started having problems urinating. I took him to the after hours clinic and they had to put him under and express him. We came to the determination that emergency adrenal surgery was needed with the thought that the tumor must have been large enough to keep him from urinating. The surgery went well, he was recovering nicely up until three days ago. I looked in his cage and he was straining to urinate again. I took him in to the vet and they once again had to put him under and exoress him. They found that he has some type of plug that keeps forming and it prevents him from going. Then, last night, I had to once again take him to the er vet because I couldn't help him to urinate. We are at a point where we don't know what to do. He is unable for the most part to urinate on his own. The one vet put him on baytril for two weeks and the other vet at the emergency clinic put him on pred, thinking it could have something to do with the adrenal that was removed. With the exception of not being able to urinate on his own, he is doing great. I am being somewhat encouraged to put him down due to this problem, but I cannot see putting the ferret down due to being unable to urinate. There has to be a solution out there somewhere, we just haven't found it yet. Any ideas? Any input is welcome. Lori Michigan Ferret Rescue www.miferretrescue.org [Posted in FML issue 4672]
