Enrichment is not just designed to improve the mental and physical health of ferrets, but also to strengthen the ferret-owner bond. Interactive enrichments intensifies the bonds between owners and ferrets as they learn to trust and enjoy each other, and learn what is acceptable and what is not. Some people may consider most enrichment programs to be the equivalent of overly pampering the ferret, giving it more attention and resources than they deserve, but in reality, a small amount of time, coupled with a few minor investments, can help ferrets stay healthier and happier, perhaps even lowering veterinary costs in the long run, but certainly making the ferret happier. Regardless of the proven physical and mental benefits, ferrets are intelligent, curious creatures, and providing stimulation to the body and mind is a moral and ethical imperative. An aggressive enrichment program is essential for ferrets housed in cages. Tori has been "pampered" all her life, even to the point of being given her own silk pillow, but the enrichment she has enjoyed has been as necessary as air or food and is NOT a luxury. http://homepage.mac.com/billgruber/fml/conclude.html Bob C [Posted in FML issue 4228]
