I thought that I would share my experience with our ferrets and the two earthquakes we have been through. In early 2001, there was a fairly large earthquake in Washington's Puget Sound area. My oldest ferret (he was a single ferret at the time) raced around one of the floors of his cage quite excited/aggitated during the earthquake. It is unknown whether or not he was upset before the earthquake as I was sleeping when it hit and my husband had just gotten home from work (which resulted in an excited ferret anyways). He settled down fairly quickly after the earthquake, which is more than I can say for myself (my first one). In early 2002 there was a fairly smalle earthquake in the area north of Albany, NY. We don't know exactly how the ferrets (now have 3) acted during this quake because we were both sleeping and the earthquake was almost (seconds from being) over by the time I realized what it was. On checking on the ferrets, they were up and looking and moving around but not particular panicked. They settled down fairly quickly after the quake as well. We didn't have a dog for either quake. The dogs barked for a while following the Seattle quake in the neighborhood. In the NY one there weren't any dogs very close by (not allowed in the apt. complex). I don't know if our ferrets reacted prior to the quake or not. I am interested in knowing.....but not interested enough to want to be in another earthquake! Going almost 23 years without been in one and then two in consective years is PLENTY for me. Best Wishes Stephanie G. 3 fuzzies and a ferret herding puppy [Posted in FML issue 4137]
