I would like to announce that we are bringing home a new little ferret girl from the city pound tomorrow. She is only 1 year old and doesn't have a name yet. The only information the pound had was she was "removed" from her previous owner. Don't know exacting what that means but she looks well and taken care of. A friend saw her picture in the newspaper and told me about her. This comes sooner than we expected. After losing Luigi just Friday it seems we are rushing. However, this little girl needs a forever home and she won't be allowed to wait until we are done grieving our lost of Luigi. After some thought, I _know_ Luigi would want us to adopt her. This does bring on a few questions that I have not had to deal with before. What do I feed her? I know ferrets don't like switching foods and there is _no_ way to find out what her previous owner feed her. What do I do if she refuses the four kinds of kibble and two kinds of moist food I currently have? I can make Bob's C. Chicken Gravy but is it possible she won't eat that either? Now a real hard question: Since I won't know about the results of the ADV test until after I adopt her, what should I do if she is positive? Is it possible to have an ADV ferret in the same house as a healthy one? Since I started reading this list in September, I know a few things _have_ to be done. I know to keep new arrivals separate from current residents. Both because of possible disease and stress. I already have an appointment tomorrow for ADV testing and distemper shot. Is there a test for ECE? Any other tests? I have read several posts that I can go back and reread if necessary regarding biting and retraining so that I can nip(pun intended) that in the bud. Also, I realize that some ferrets just don't get along with other ferrets so I know I have to supervise their first encounters to make sure blood doesn't go flying. I have also read that ferrets that have been rescued may need more lovings (lap time and play time) before they settle down and feel like they are at home. I want to thank all the families(humans and furbutts) that have sent us e-mail and e-cards. The support of your love was very much appreciated. I will be sending out individual email this weekend but I wanted all to know I received them and read them. This list is great! -- William M.
