Lisette that's a great letter! Hopefully it will serve its intended purpose. So many don't realize that old and sick ferrets die in shelters every day. it is a sad, and very painful fact. That part of sheltering I have a hard time coping with. it's hard for me to get a ferret that's old into this shelter. I swear I know which ones are going to die these days. I look at them when their parents drop them off, and wish I could send them home again. they are like the silver boy you wrote about. They have no clue what is happening. Why they are here, why their parents left, why they can't just go home. I talk to them, sing to them, give them every bit of care possible, but so many of them don't want to live anymore, they go into shelter shock. They don't want to eat. They refuse drink and treats. You let them out to play, they just run back to their cage to hide, or stand there not knowing what to do or just not caring. They waste away, the victims of abandonment and of a throw away society. For every person who adopts a shelter ferret, you're a hero. For every person who makes the commitment for the lifetime of their pet, you're a hero too. So few animals in shelters are here for a valid reason. They did not deserve being left here. But at least people had the sense to bring them where they will be cared for, if they cannot/will not. They get to die with dignity and knowing love, sometimes for the first time in their little lives. OK I'm getting way too emotional here, gotta go scoop poop for 60 ferrets now!
