We thought all of you would like to know how Mira is doing after her radiation treatment following surgery to remove skin cancer. Her left foot swelled up, necessitating frequent hot packs and medication. Her shoulder skin became irritated and itchy. The swelling went down but went up again during the heat wave. The skin across her shoulders is again pink and soft, and fur is growing along the suture lines. We won't know for a few more months if the cancer is totally gone, but so far we have seen no recurrence. She still plays and her life is back to normal. The total expenses, including the cost of printing and mailing the request for donations for her and some travel costs were about $7,000. FACT raised over $10,000. People were remarkably generous. The extra funds will pay for some upcoming adrenal surgeries and help with foster veterinary expenses. We think we made the right decision, as the cancer would have killed her from the way it was rapidly spreading. One of our members generously volunteered to care for Mira while she was undergoing treatment, bringing her back and forth for her daily treatments. Another member cared for her for another week. This way we saved the hospital boarding fees. She spent weekends home at the FACT shelter. We'd like you to check out our new website (http://www.ferret-fact.org/). While some parts are still being constructed, the section about Mira has some terrific photos of her, from the inital leasion to her current state. FACT would like to thank all who contributed. It has been heartwarming to see such an outpouring of kindness. Moxie FACT FML/ebay coordinator [Posted in FML issue 3840]
