OK. First, I'd like to say that I have a five year old son and five ferrets. Our ferrets are in our bedroom and you have to go through our bedroom to get to his. Everytime he goes through our bedroom, he'll tell me if there is poop on the floor, or give the ferrets treats (I keep them on the computer desk), play with their toys, or feed them (their food is in a container on the floor). He also has a mouse of his own which he feeds by himself (must be why mouse looks like a butterball). I'm not trying to flame, but not all kids are bad with animals. I think it really depends on their parents. My friend, Tracy, has three kids (6, 5, and 3.5) and they are just as good with the ferrets (the 5 year old is afraid of them though, but she's afraid of EVERY animal). I would also like to mention that my son knows how to pick up and put done ferrets carefully. I'm not trying to say my son is perfect because he's not, but he IS great with animals. I guess you have to be with 1 mouse, 5 ferrets, and 2 cats in the house LOL.
