Hi Ellen! That's great that you're planning ahead! Pittsburgh has a GREAT ferret community and tons of great people! To start answering your questions, before I needed a bigger place, I lived here for two years with my ferrets and they are allowed here. The places are very nice and the management is wonderful! The information is: Cascades Townhomes 100 East West Drive Pittsburgh, PA 15237 146 Apartments , Built: 1973 (800)266-7080 x 41834 I would recommend, when you begin looking for apartments, to downplay the ferrets a bit. Usually, I would say that I had "two caged ferrets, they're kinda like guinea pigs". This usually lights a little bit of familiarity with landlords and since they see them as caged animals, sometimes they are a bit more easy going on renting to us! >1. Any vet recommendations? I know of the ferret central list, but I'd >like some actual recommendations if possible. Pittsburgh has a lot of great vets that are wonderful with ferrets. Dr Kelly Yeager at Northview Animal Hospital is wonderful. She's in North Hills and the number there is 412-364-5353. Dr Ruth Heller is another great ferret vet. She's in Murraysville, PA, about 20-30 minutes from town. She runs her own vet hospital called Borderbrook Animal Hospital and the number there is 724-327-2200. >2. Bradford is smack in the middle of downtown...does anyone know of any >laws or ordinances they have on ferrets, or limiting the number of pets >you can have? I don't know of any, but in the state of PA, you have to have your ferret vaccinated for rabies annually. Pittsburgh also has a great ferret club called Three Rivers Ferret Council and they have monthly meetings, shows, and other activities. For more information on their club, you can visit this website: http://home.att.net/~trferretcouncil/ There is also a ferret sheltering organization within the club and another great shelter that can always use volunteers about 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh called Planned Ferrethood. Their website is www.plannedferrethood.com These are great ways to meet new people with similar interests! Hope this helps and I hope you enjoy the 'Burgh! Lisa Shortley [Posted in FML issue 3675]
