Been there.  Done that.  I made a "cage" that went around the space
heater, complete with doors so that the owner could reach in and light the
heater, and turn the gas on and off.  I used "standard" galvanized cage
wire 1 x 2 inch square openings, cage clips to hold it together on the
sides, top and bottom.  It worked fine.  No restrictions on air flow, but
kept the ferret out of it.  The top of the "cage" was about 1 foot higher
than the top of the heater, in case the ferret decided to climb it.
