Well, that's because not every ferret will develop adrenal tumors in both
glands - in fact, only about 15% do, if I'm remembering my percentages
correctly.  The other ferrets do very well with one gland.  If both glands
do develop problems, then the ferret can do very well on medication after
removal, but why do that if you don't need to?
 
It's a commonly asked question, and I do know of some of my colleagues
that will remove a normal gland, but I don't.
