I hesitated to post when Diane first asked how to get rid of spiders. I wanted to check with my family... especially Rebecca who is so arachniphobic that she has developed Spider Radar. She can walk into a room, feel the presence of a spider, then look around to figure out where the spider is. The consensus is that none of us has seen a spider for about two weeks, even though the nights have been quite cool and they usually squirm into every corner of every room at this time of year. After pouring over the pictures and fine print in three or four catalogues, we bought the Pest-A-Cator Plus Two to try to scare the mice and the spiders out of our basement. Our overly domesticated ferrets never seem to have noticed them, but we had so many mice that we found one baby sitting in the laundry sink and Oreo the fat cat caught two in a week. I figure that means we had a small city of them behind the panelling and above the drop ceiling. In fact, we heard them fighting up there one evening. No matter how we mopped the floors, washed bedding and cleaned cages, we couldn't get rid of a strong urine smell in the ferrets' Wreck Room, and I began to think it was the mice. We didn't want to poison them and have dead mice behind the walls, and I think most mice are too smart for traps. We plugged the new device into the wall about three weeks ago. Even though it was humid week before last, the urine smell was much weaker. I can't smell urine now even though the floor is overdue for mopping, and Oreo hasn't caught any more mice. We chose the Pest-A-Cator Plus Two over the other two or three similar devices because it uses ultrasonic waves in the air and electromagnetic pulses through the electrical wiring both at the same time, without having to choose one or the other, and therefore repelling roaches and spiders as well as rats and mice. It promises that it will not bother humans or non-rodent pets. Sure enough, we have not noticed anything that indicates the ferrets have noticed a thing. The Pest-A-Cator Plus covers 1000 sq ft and the Plus Two 2500 sq ft. Although it is plugged into a wall socket in the basement (it's about 3"x5") we haven't seen spiders on the first or second floors. No one has checked the attic yet. We found it in the SilvoHome catalog, Item 12145 for $49.99 (12144 at $39.99 for the Plus). 1-800-331-1261 I also bought their SurfBoard, a swivel arm rest for your computer mouse arm that attaches to a keyboard tray. Takes a lot of strain off the neck and shoulder on that side. Blessings Judith [Posted in FML issue 3556]
