Be very very careful with duct tape.  It is extremely sticky.  Imagine
what could happen if your fur kids started scratching at the tape (which is
likely--mine seem to decide on a single spot and then scratch like there's
no tomorrow) and get caught it it.  It could be very painful and very
dangerous.
 
I would suggest measuring the underside of the couch.  Go to the hardware
store and purchase a piece of plywood the correct size--two ply will do
fine.  You can use wood or drywall screws to attach the plywood to the
bottom of your couch.  You could also use plexi, but be sure to pre drill
holes in plexi before using it.
