For the first time in history, a ferret bill has passed the California Senate Appropriations Committee, by a vote of 7-3. Various forms of ferret legalization have come before the legislature since the early 90's. For the last several years, these bills have been killed in the Appropriations Committee by its former chairman. At the conclusion of the vote, Appropriations Chairman (and SB1093 co-author) Dede Alpert exclaimed, "And let's hope we never see it again!" Another Senator cast his vote "in the name of illegal ferrets everywhere!" Senators voting no were Escutia, Johnson, and Murray. Johnson's no vote was a surprise. Senators not voting were Burton, McPherson, and Poochigian. If one of these Senators is yours, politely ask them to vote yes when SB1093 comes before the full Senate next week. EVERYONE needs to ask their Senators to vote YES next week. The Assembly will take up SB1093 after Senate approval, so start contacting your assemblymembers, too. If you don't live in California, do you have friends or relatives who do? Do you buy products from California companies (PetCo, Lixit, Nature's Miracle, ...)? -- let them know you care about ferrets in California.
