INTRODUCTION TO THE FERRET WE CARE about you and your new ferret, and have provided some information here that we hope you will read carefully. Your local veterinarian and your pet store can also answer many of your questions. Several good books are now available and make excellent references. Ferrets are small, intelligent and extremely playful. Like a dog or a cat, a ferret is a serious responsibility, and depends on you for all its needs. Ferrets require a roomy cage or kennel, Cedar shavings make excellent bedding, and should be changed twice weekly. When you are home and can supervise, the ferret may be allowed out for short periods of excerise. Prevent access to the back of fridges, washers, sofabeds, etc.. Ferrets may be walked outdoors on a leash, using an H type harness and lots of patience. Keep your pet from dogs, tunnels or fences. Ferrets are naturally friendly, but may play roughly on occasion. Discourage your ferret from becoming overexcited especially with strangers as this may lead to a playful nip Always supervise a ferrets play with children Dont forget to obtain booster vaccinations for your ferret. Canine distemper and rabies are recommended. Have your veterinarian check for ear mites, and protect your ferret from exposure to human influenza they are susceptible. Make an appointment to have your ferret spayed or neutered, if the operation has not allready been performed. Please talk to you veterinarian about the importance of theses procedures. Bathe your ferret once weekly, and be careful to rinse thoroughly, protect from chills and change all the bedding at the time of each bath. this is also a good time to clip the nalis. feed your pet a high quality dry formulation ferret food. moistening the food for the first few weeks will help a young ferret to a better start. A high protein, low ash diet may be of particular benefit in the feeding of the male ferret. Always provide fresh water in a ball-type bottle change daily. shelley [Posted in FML issue 3405]
