Mayor Guiliani is making headlines in other cities now for being so unreasonable about ferrets, and is being made to look very foolish as a result. The following article about "wild weasels" and Guiliani's messy divorce was in the Boston Globe on Thursday May 17: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/137/nation/ In_New_York_talk_of_ferrets_and_divorce+.shtml [Combine above 2 lines into one line, no spaces] The Globe may not allow you to view this article by the time you receive this issue of the FML, so here's a little quote (less than 1/4 of the article, hopefully it's ok BIG): "Giuliani's battles, over the course of his tenure, have gradually taken ever-more-curious turns. First, he waged war on squeegee men, panhandlers, and graffitti artists - all fairly popular measures. Then he went after hotdog vendors, taxi drivers, and jaywalkers - which were less so. And now ferrets - which simply baffles many. The ferret lovers won the vote, 26-13, with seven abstentions, but they fell eight votes short of the margin they'll need to override an expected veto.... ''I'm an admirer of his accomplishments and of his ability to mobilize the sclerotic bureaucracy,'' attorney Richard Emery said Monday. ''But for him to get into the muck and mire of so much silliness - it's sad. He's become a tragic, silly figure in an operetta.'' " I don't know if this can help-- he sounds like the kind of person who will get more bullheaded as a result of this kind of thing-- but at least the next mayor could, say, legalize ferrets to help establish himself as a paragon of sanity... The article by the way did not talk to any ferret owners, but took the tone that legalizing ferrets is an eminently reasonable thing to do, so that was good PR.
