Each year the Humane Society and various rescue agencies gather together at the Detroit, Michigan Zoo and hold a huge adoptathon. I heard about this event through a friend who worked for Animal Welfare. It was too late to get in that year but decided to try for the next. When the time came we were told emphatically that no ferrets or ferret rescue would be allowed to participate. Well, you just don't tell a ferret or ferret people "NO". :-) Thus began the efforts of the Michigan Ferret Rescue/Adoption members to change the minds of the zoo director. Some members wrote letters. Others placed calls. Still other talked to influential people involved with the Humane Society. Shelters were called upon by the Humane Society to take in the ferrets that were turned over to them and we answered each and every call. Through our perseverance we made it!!! The Michigan Ferret Rescue/Adoption Network will be at the Zoo!!!!! The first ever ferret organization invited!!! This sounds like a happy ending, but the hardest fight is upon us. Ferrets are illegal in Detroit, because of this we will not be allowed to have ferrets with us. At this time I would like to extend an invitation to all ferret owners/lovers/aficionados to come and rally at the zoo. Let them see how many of us there really are. All of us are going to be needed to change the law. Let's start this weekend! The adoptathon is being held Saturday and Sunday (28th & 29th) from 10:00 a.m. til 5:00 p.m. The zoo is located on Main St. in Royal Oak, Michigan.
