The number of ferrets in our shelter are between 40 and 80. They have (exept for the sick room and baby room) 2 "rooms" where they stay. One is inside our house, one is outside. Also we have a play-garden outside. All the ferrets are free to walk around through the whole house (including toilet, bathroom, kitchen etc) exept for the baby room and sick room. They are happy to "help out" while we are cleaning but also while we are houskeeping, watching television etc. The room outside is for quarantaine and observation. The first 21 days the ferrets who are staying there won't come into the house. If they play, they play there, are free to play with eachother, discover eachother cages (14) and toys.. If the weather is fine they go outside, in the play-garden also in the garden (on leashes) or we go for a walk (with 5 persons each 2-3 ferrets). If there is a periode there won't be new ferrets in the shelter we will change them out between inside and outside. Also every 3 or 4 weeks they got a new cage with new mates and toys. It keep them social, it's great for their curiosity and none of my ferrets has trouble with getting used to.. or stress. To my opinion and experience ferrets won't get agressive if they don't walk every day or for at least 4 hours, more important is they have mates, they are a part of the family, you hug them (also if it's not their playtime). There are many ferrets who don't like to walk around for hours (their energy is not always the same nor their mood or age), after 20 minuits they seek a place to sleep or go back into their cage or someone elses.
