I am in the process of writing a letter to the director of my local humane society. I hope to convince him that bonded animals should not be adopted separately. In volunteering at the shelter, I have seen too many cases of animals that were very attached to eachother being advertised, and adopted, as individuals. Often they were animals that are difficult to introduce, such as rabbits or male mice, that may never be able to have a companion again. After recently seeing kennel workers holding three ferrets, and encouraging people to "Come pick one!" I decided I want to try to do something about this. I know many of you run or are involved with shelters that have strict policies about keeping bonded animals togethers. Since my letter will focus on rabbits and ferrets, I would love to hear any opinions from you about why you believe that is important. I want to quote some shelters, but I am also looking for "undeniable" information, such as studies, medical reports, or specific cases of animals becoming depressed after separation. Any information or opinions are welcome. Thank you! Kara (under the supervision of Bennett, Bianca, Merlin, Anakin, Amidala) [Posted in FML issue 3168]
