Condolences to those with sick or angeled power stair climbers. The tapeworms come from fleas ingested into the cat's/ferret's stomach. This can also occur if your cat/ferret cleans itself and happens to eat a flea that is on it's fur. For some reason, fleas like to eat tapeworm eggs. The egg sits in the flea's stomach until the flea itself is ingested into the animal. The flea is dissolved by the animal's stomach acid, but a special protective coating allows the tapeworm egg to survive and grow. Kate is correct in saying that a regular deworming schedule should be followed if there is any chance that your pet may come into contact with fleas, regardless of how that contact takes place.
