Toys are a favorite, but there are other attractions for the ferrets. A. Small children's swimming pool or a turtle sand box filled with black soil is a ferrets paradise. B. Plastic storage box, 21 1/2 by 14 3/4 by 8 1/2, filled halfway with long cooking rice is a diggers dream. C. Plastic storage container, 16 by 10 3/4 by 4 1/2, filled with cool water on a hot day. Small toys (bottle cap, paper cup, plastic balls) on the bottom and watch your ferrets have fun. Suggest : use one large beach towel or 2 bath towels for container to sit on or near. D. Old socks with celophane paper, a small bell inside is another favorite. Leave toe side closed and cut where the heel stops. After placing celophane/bell inside, either hand/machine sew ends. E. Old pillow no longer used, pillow case is a favorite hide out. (leave pillow case hollow at the back end for play area). F. Under the bed cardboard storage boxes can be taped together. Lids stay on. Cut openings in places top/sides and connect boxes for a run thru. G. Large plastic bags you bring home are like a crinkle sack and good place to roll and scratch. (some ferrets do need to be supervised when bag is in use) H. A string attached to a suction cup to the ceiling, then tie a fishing bobber to it. Or a yard stick with string and a small fishing bobber attached is another ferret favorite. I. Water drainage (PVC) pipe, comes in 8 ft lengths at hardware supply stores, both in black and white. Tried dryer hoses to find ferrets would rip plastic material and as fast as I would tape, they would make a new hole elsewhere. Drain pipe is heavily constructed and doesn't rip or tear. Select length and suggest a diameter of 4 inch at the ends, even a 5 pounder can get thru. Another pipe to use is, corragated drainage pipe. Beware of rubber toys which have a nose, ear, etc sticking out, you may have a ferret may chew it off and get a blockage. For kits under 6 months of age, plastic balls that contain holes in it is bad since a tooth can get stuck. Debbie [Posted in FML issue 2989]
