As summer approaches, there is a possibility that a ferret can become
dehydrated. This happened recently on a weekend night here in the D.C. area
when the owners were unable to get a vet. Fortunately, they knew a
knowledgeable person who recommended a 1:1 solution of Karo syrup and water.
I am told a 1:1 solution of honey and water or diluted gatorade works as well.
In this case, the animal was kept alive until it could get to a vet and was
eventually saved.

Another source of ferret info..The Weasel Help Quart.

North Carolina is considering a ban on ferrets.

sorry for this rambling post, a rare stream of consciousness!

[Sigh. All at least 12 hours driving away. The only Canadian one's on
the other side of the continent. Oh well ;-{]
