I thought that it would be interesting to discuss what ferrets like to eat.
Some pet store owners and books, suggest supplimenting a ferrets diet with
meat (one book I read even suggested fresh road kills, another book said
NOT to do this since these animals often carry diseases and parasites).
Dixie won't touch meat of any form; beef, chicken, fish, cooked or raw.
One thing that I read that was very bad for ferrets was anything with a
lot of salt. Dixie lives almost exclusively on Hill's Science Diet Feline
Maintenance. I tried some ferret food once that was even more expensive
than Science Diet and I noticed that there was a lot more in the litter
box to clean out. I thought that she was just eating more of the ferret
food since she liked it so much, but in a side by side taste test, Science
Diet won.

[Ours won't touch anything but. Except for treats]

Here's a list of some human food that Dixie likes:

raw egg (she doesn't like her eggs cooked)
cucumber
ice cream!!!! (1)
milk (2)
melon of any kind
apple
bread (sometimes)
soda *
beer (as long as it's flat, otherwise the bubbles get up her nose) *
linatone
raw mushrooms
M&M's *
grapes
soap (soap? yech!) *
any water that she doesn't have to lick out of her bottle
spaghetti noodles

[Tried any peaches, raisins, peanuts, Baily's Irish Cream yet? Winsted's
book warns about soap. Nicia also likes Mr. Clean - was the first
time we've ever seen a ferret throw up. CRL]

*(I never give her this on purpose, she scrounges this sometimes)

(1) Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics depict ferrets tunneling through 2 feet of
solid stone for a few licks of Hagan Daz chocolate ice cream. (-:

(2) A book I read said that a little milk now and then is fine as long
as it doesn't give them diarrhea.
