If you look at the ingredients, N-Bones are little more than gelatin,
corn starch, and some chicken for flavor.

Wait... I just looked at a newer package. Looks like they ditched the
cornstarch. Good! Now it's (in order): soy protein, gelatin, wheat
gluten, rosemary, ginger, chicken meal, taurine.

Glad they got rid of the corn.

In any case: I, too, think they are pretty expensive. I started to
experiment with making my own a while back. I used just plain gelatin
and low-sodium chicken broth, and that did not work too well. It's
hard to get the right consistency... most often it turned out either
like jello, or a rock.

The problem is that there was no filler (like the soy protein, or
formerly corn starch) to regulate the texture. I'm not a fan of the
soy protein much, either, but I suppose it's better than corn.

Does anybody know where to get chicken meal? I bet finely ground
chicken meal plus chicken broth and gelatin would make fine "bones".

I also haven't figured out what to use for a mold. I was putting it in
the bottom of ice cube trays and figured I'd slice them up once cool.
But that's too blocky.
