Dr Williams:
You said on the mailing list that you'd never seen someone
allergic to ferrets before and that you thought they were hypoallergenic.
Well, I'm afraid to disappoint you, but I'm afraid that isn't the case.
I know several people allergic to ferrets, including my fiance' (no, this
is not just a suspician on our parts... Dave has seen one of the best
allergists in the area, and the allergist is QUITE convinced that Dave's
asthma is triggered by the ferrets. Believe me, we've fought against
this idea for a couple of years now, but are finally accepting it).
I think you need to make a distinction between people who are
allergic only to cats, and people who are, at least technically, allergic
to other animals as well. Ferrets are certainly nowhere near as bad an
allergen as cats, and many people with cat allergies only will have no
trouble with ferrets. But ferrets do seem to be at least as bad as, if
not worse than, dogs and rabbits, at least from our experience.
