As to the fert, you need to take it.  SImply take it.  If you have to, wait
until he is gone, after dark, and just go get it.  Don't say anthing to
anyone about what you did..  he won't miss it.  Is a humane thing you do.
WOUld be good to take just the fert, leave the cage.
