I have never had a ferret that chewed up and ate beddings for the sake
of a snack. However, I did have one that began chewing material, the
fringe of a carpet. This was a precursor to her showing other signs of
insulinoma; ie. lethargy, and in particular, nausea.

After we got her on some meds, she ceased this behavior.
