I have five ferrets, three cats and nine kids.  My cats are litter and
outdoors trained.  My kids are all in school, so potty trained but my
FERRETS are NOT.  If given run of the house, they will go in any corner
( they say any port in the storm will do).  We have a BEIGE carpet
throughout the house.  The are so much fun to have loose but I felt the
same as you do about my carpets.  We found a middle of the road solution.
We have a very, very large bathroom that is vynal flooring.  When it is
play time, all the kids grab a ferret and go up to the bathroom and play
with them.  I have all their toys stored up there and two litter boxes
which they make most of the time now.  We are still having fun with our
ferrets, just not freely in the house.  We have one cat that is a bit
disagreeable with our ferrets anyways, so this keeps them safe.  He almost
killed my littlest one when I was away on a vacation and my adult daughter
was here with the house.  When she called me and told me of Nikitas state,
I was so worried the whole way home from my trip.  NIkita did survive this
but I don't want her exposed again.  So now everyone is happy.  I hope you
can find a spot in your home, where you may once again enjoy your little
