Ian, age 13,has two ferrets, Fred(M,7mos) and Scooter(F,1yr). Among
their favorites activities are cleaning out the bookshelves, digging
out the carpet padding, chasing a squeaky cat toy through 16 feet
of drain tube curled up beneath the futon, playing in the computer
keyboard box, and hanging out in the hammock, which is what I wanted
to write about.

The hammock is a 18"x18" rectangle made of two layers of artificial
sheepskin. I bought 1/2 yard of the material for about $6.00US and
a set of large eyelets for about $1.00. Since the material is about
6 feet wide you can made two hammock sets from 1/2 yard. Cut it into
4 pieces and fasten two pieces together, fuzzy side up, with the
eyelets in the corner. Hang in the ferret cage. If your sewing machine
can hack it, you might hem the edges first. Ferrets love to crawl
between the two layers on cool nights.

The boxes that computer keyboard come in make good toys. They're just
tall enough for a tight squeeze, which they love. Glue both ends closed
and cut a 2" hole in each flat side so they won't get trapped inside if
one ferrets flips the box over while the other is inside.

Fred's current project is to drag Ian Matchbox Car case through the tube.
The case is too heavy to lift and to big for the tube but he is determined.

If you ferret needs a stash, try this. Buy about 16' of plastic drain
pipe from the builder's supply (mentioned often here) and coil it into
a spiral. Place a board of the hole in center or put under couch or
bed.

Bob Jernigan (Ian, Fred, Scooter too)
