By the look of the dawn, I could tell that we were going to have a
beautiful morning here at the Bridge. There are days when I can tell
that something wonderful is going to happen, and today was going to be
one of those days. I could just feel it in my bones.

I got word from the Boss that a very special lady was going to be
visiting us today. She was not a fuzzy, but she had been a big part of
the lives of quite a few of them who were here at the Bridge, so the Boss
granted her special permission to visit today. Before she arrived, the
Boss made sure to tell me her story.

Her name was Gerry and she was a German shepherd to be precise, but she
wasn't just any dog - to many furry and fuzzy ones she was "mommy," and
was well loved by all that knew her. It didn't matter to Gerry what kind
of furry or fuzzy it was, she considered them to be her pups. She took
great pride in watching out for the little ones under her care, be they
fuzzies, cats, or her own kind. To all that lived with her in the Hoomin
world, and especially to her hoomin Wendy, she was known as "Mommy Dog."
Because of Gerry's gentle way with furry and fuzzy ones, the Boss could
not help but to make an exception for her and let her visit us.

It wasn't but a few days ago that Wendy let Gerry leave the Hoomin world
for the Bridge after thirteen wonderful years of being together. Not too
long ago, Gerry had suffered a stroke and somehow she had survived it,
but eventually she just became too tired to be "Mommy Dog" anymore, and
with a heavy heart Wendy let her beautiful companion go. As Gerry left
for the Bridge, Wendy held her head and lovingly stroked her fur. The
last thing Gerry heard in the Hoomin world were the affectionate words
Wendy spoke through her tears, and after one last hug, Gerry left for the
Bridge, free from her pain.

I watched for Gerry's arrival. I had asked the Boss how she would
arrive, but all he told me was that I would know when she got here. I
scanned the early morning sky for some kind of sign, but the sun was only
just starting to show through the horizon. I could still see the night
stars. All of a sudden one star lit up the dawn and outshone the rising
sun. I recognized the star, which was part of the constellation Canis
Major -- it was the Dog Star, Sirius. How could that be, I thought to
myself? It was still winter, and Sirius was a summer star; I should not
being seeing it for months. I watched Sirius get brighter and brighter,
and then I realized that Sirius was not one, but two stars. It was the
lesser star which was shining brighter and brighter, and it appeared to
be heading directly towards the Bridge.

As the star approached, it became even more brilliant, and with a
luminous flash it appeared to burst onto the Bridge. As my eyes adjusted
to the faint light of the dawn, I could see Gerry standing on the Bridge.
She was a beautiful dog to look at, and immediately she offered me her paw.

I welcomed her to our Bridge and told her of the special arrangements the
Boss had made for her, and she smiled the widest dog smile I had ever
seen. It wasn't long, and one by one they came...

Dino had rounded up fuzzies Gizmo, Goldrush and Numa to welcome their
Mommy Dog. They all jumped all over her, and Gerry had a hard time
trying to kiss them with her long tongue until they finally settled
underneath her belly, just as they had done when they were kits. Gerry
nuzzled them softly, and almost instinctively they all fell fast asleep;
they were in the safety of their Mommy Dog.

Next to arrive were the furries. Casper had rounded up Smokey and Merlin
from the cat Bridge and one could barely hear themselves think because of
all the purring! Smokey and Merlin wove themselves between Gerry's legs
while Gerry panted silently enjoying their feel, even though she was so
excited that she wanted to run with joy! It was hard to tell cat from
dog as they rubbed fur to fur.

Casper had also rounded up Jack from the dog Bridge, and it was then that
Gerry could not longer contain herself. She and Jack ran in circles
around each other, until they ended up nose to nose taking in each
other's scent. It was such an emotional thing to watch, and I tried
not to let it get to me, but I have to admit -- my eyes leaked just a
little bit. I hoped the Boss wasn't watching...

But after a bit, I could see a troubled look in Gerry's eyes. With great
sadness, Gerry told me that a furry was missing. It was Mefur. Mefur
resided with Smokey and Merlin at the cat Bridge, but somehow she seemed
to have not made it here. I was getting ready to check with the Boss,
when all of a sudden I heard a wild hiss and Mefur jumped from a tree
directly onto Gerry's back, being careful to shield her nails. Mefur was
a wild one! She batted Gerry on the head, making Gerry turn in circles
until she fell off. Gerry smiled another gigantic dog smile and lapped
Mefur until she was soaking wet!

Their reunion was now complete. It was so amazing to see all the fuzzies
and furries that Gerry had raised in her thirteen years. I thought to
myself, if only Wendy could see this and know that they were all doing
just fine.

But the Boss was way ahead of me. He whispered to Wendy when she was
fast and deeply asleep - he told her to look at Sirius when the summer
came. He told her that whenever she saw Sirius, the Dog Star, she would
also be looking at Gerry. Gerry would be the tiny star just underneath
Sirius, Sirius' companion star. Just like Gerry had been mommy and
companion to all the furries and fuzzies in the Hoomin world, she would
also be a companion in the summer sky.

It was a fitting tribute for such a wonderful dog as Gerry, the Mommy
Dog. Sometimes the Boss just outdid himself...
