Go to http://www.ferretcentral.org and get the ferret faqs and go to
http://theferretstore.com and buy a copy of Kim Schilling's book "Ferrets
for Dummies".  Between the two you'll have several hours reading and will
have a pretty good idea what is up with ferrets.
