Michael,
 
Mast cell tumours, a common skin tumour of ferrets, often look like scabs.  A
scab of unknown origin that refuses to heal, is getting bigger, and is losing
hair sounds pretty suspicious -- I'd have your vet take a look.  If it is a
mast cell tumour, they are usually benign but should still be removed a.s.a.p.
