I strongly suggest keeping the window closed.  I know my guys could easily
scratch through any screen in my windows (no matter what they are made
from - metal or plastic).  If you want them to be able to sit and look out
the window, why not put a table in front of the window or get one of those
shelves that attaches to the sill (it is designed for cats to lay in front
of the window)?  I think it would be safer for the ferrets and still allow
them to check out the outdoors!
