The IFC has been a generous friend of Support Our Shelters from the
beginning, and this year in Portland was another blessing for S.O.S.

In keeping with the nature of the ferret, they were goofy and silly
supporters of S.O.S. Did anyone get a video of the exotic dancer who
raised money for us? She was exotic in both senses of the word, I can
tell you. A marvelous giant ferret who danced while a donation jar was
passed. Gosh... not only can Donna Spirito sew like nobody else, she
also dances!! Too much. And she raised $121.38 to help shelter ferrets.

In addition to making costumes, what an incredible ferret artist Donna
is! After I asked if people would be interested in our resurrecting the
Ferret Coloring Book, Donna showed me some of her amazing drawings.
Wow!

I mentioned the Ferret Coloring Book (actually called The Fantastic
Ferret Fun Book, drawn by Linda Gaylord) because I was giving a short
history of Support Our Shelters and a description of what the WONDERFUL
women of S.O.S. do to raise money to pay vet bills for ferret shelters.
I really enjoyed putting the big picture together for the group. The
S.O.S. people work so hard and do so much! In addition to Ela Heyn
McAdams, Sharon Bearden, Lisa Roth, Joanne Ruffner, Kat Parsons,
Robin Jones and Risa DiVincenzo I made sure to describe all that was
contributed by our former members, Georgia Wood and Judy Cooke.

I was SOOOOOO glad to hear Judy being honored for her work. The list of
all the fundraising programs she has started is long and so impressive.
I just wish Judy had been there to hear herself appreciated as she
deserves to be. I can't think of anyone who has done as much for
ferrets in the same way as Judy Cooke. She started the Giving Tree, the
FML Calendar, the Card Exchanges, the Memorial Page, and the You're An
Angel Program, plus she raised money through the FML 5000th issue and
her own 50th birthday. Whatta woman!

As I spoke, the IFC passed the donation jar for S.O.S. again... and the
wonderful people stuffed juuuuuuust under $300.00 in that little jar.
Linda Iroff could not bear the not-round number, and at her urging,
people made up the difference. They made up the difference so well,
that I walked away with $302.80. Sorry Linda!

I loved spending time with Julie Fossa, BIG and Helen. Special, special
people. Another treat was meeting Ken and Karen of dookingferret.com
Such great cartoons! I can't wait to see more.

As others have said already, it was great to put faces to the names. In
my case, when I would see a familiar name on a badge, I could visualize
a return address sticker or the style of the person's checks. So many
wonderful, generous people on the FML....

Next time I'd like to travel by magic carpet, though. Much more
reliable than the airplanes that left me hanging out for over a day!

Many thanks and many blessings,
Judith White
