With regard to Vicki's informational post of the availability of this
new CDV, Neovac D, it has been discussed previously in 2010 here on
the FML. I believed it was Dr. Jerry Murray who commented here about
this new vaccine and the fact that at the time it had not been tested
thoroughly to assure its safety for our ferrets.

I inquired of him and Dr. Heller today. This is what they had to say
respectively.

Hi Cathy

Yes I have posted on the FML about this vaccine.

1) It is not approved for use in ferrets.
2) It has not been tested in ferrets to make sure it actually works in
ferrets. This is important because ferrets need a higher antigen level
than dogs do to get a good immune response from a distemper vaccine.
3) The company did a very small study (10 ferrets if I remember
correctly) to see if it was safe in ferrets. It did not cause
distemper or have any serious side effects.
4) The company said they were interested in developing a distemper
vaccine for ferrets in the future. I would not reccomend using it until
there is a study showing it actually works in ferrets.

Hope that helps,
Jerry

I have been trying to get information on this vaccine for some weeks
now and have been not receiving replies from the company to my
requests. I am currently exchanging emails with Mr. Carroll directly
and hopefully will get some real answers on safety and efficacy and
what studies have been done.

At this point, I am unwilling to recommend it, based on the fact that
they have been unwilling to answer my questions to date, but will be
continuing to investigate it.

Feel free to carry this information to any ferret related lists or
queries. I am not on the FML, in particular.

Dr. Ruth

I hope sharing this information will help you when talking to your vets
or making personal decisions about appropriate ferret CD vaccines.
