I wonder if this had anything to do with the ferrets possibly being from
a lab - I've had some that came in from Walter Reed Memorial Hospital and
they had metal ear tags - if they were removed or got caught, it is
possible that it may have torn the ear flap and created the notch...
 
I am not aware of any breeders or farms that notch an ear...HTH
