I think you've got the answer to your own question there...........they're
scared of leaving their domain !  Mine are well used to going walkies with
the dogs as well as out rabbiting, but Woody refuses point blank to walk on
tarmac and hates cars.  Buzz doesn't give a whatsit, he just wants to keep
up with the dogs.  Now I normally put Woody up on my shoulder and he sits
there till we reach more grass.  When we first got them, I used to put them
in a carrying sack till we got to a more ferret friendly bit.
 
I bet if you put yours into a pet carrier and took them to the park or out
in the country in a field, you'd find they behave completely differently.
Don't forget, they don't know what cars are, as far as they're concerned,
they're just big noisy smelly things that want to eat them.  Even the one
that takes no notice of the cars must be a bit worried about going too far
away from safety.
 
Try it and see what happens.
