I let the girls (Lucy & Greta) out for playtime this morning and went into
the livingroom to go thru the FML. A little while later, I heard banging
noises against the cage so I ran in to see what Lucy was up to. Well. I
was just shocked to see her hanging off the side of the cage by her foot!
She was trying to get down when she got her back toe caught in between two
pieces of wire at the outside corner of the cage. Her toe was pointing up
and she was pointing down! I grabbed her to get her weight off the toe
and somehow, while she was crying (oh, that was ME that was crying!) and
squirming, I managed to pry the bars apart enough to get her toe free, I'm
not sure how I did it without a couple extra hands in there, but I guess
you do what you have to do, when you have to. (She gave me kisses when I
got her free!)

Her toe was in the wrong direction and swelling fast. I called a few
people and finally found an emergency clinic about 25 miles from me that
accepts ferrets (the closer one will not take ferrets). I rushed her out
there. The vet took an x-ray and determined that the toe was not broken,
but dislocated. She put a little splint on it and wrapped her foot all the
way up to her knee. She has to wear it for a month. I brought Lucy home
and put her to bed. I rearranged the cage so she didn't need to go
upstairs for any reason. I put one of the litter boxes in the cage that
my Dad had cut down two sides on, so she could get her foot in there with
no problem. I also put duct tape on the sides of the cage where she caught
her toe on.

Tonight, she is running around like nothing happened, altho a bit clumsey.
I'm so happy to see she's feeling good and no longer in pain! What a day!

By the way, this is the same foot that she lost a toe on when she was a
baby (before I got her) and it is very difficult to get her to let me trim
her nails on that foot, Now it will probably be impossible.

Todd; As soon as my girls SEE the ferretone bottle in my hand they both
start licking the air! Too Funny!

Barb, and the ever-lovin' fuzzies;
Lucy ( Mom, I can still get into the bathtub...see?)
Greta ( Why is Lucy WEARING a sock on her foot? Did she run out of
places to stash them?)
