Eva John Lyford wrote of the Michigan Humane Society being out of 'touch' with
ferrets. It's true. However, if you work with your local office, you may get
cooperation in getting them to notify others willing to 'foster' found ferrets
and get them out of the shelter. The Dept. of Public Health is vehemenantly
against them, however. In Michigan, to have a 'shelter', you must be licenced,
and have a facility that is capable of being 'scrubbed down and disinfected',
basically tile walls and floor and such, like a Humane Society, vet office, or
hospital (human). Therefore, we are needing 'foster homes' or 'halfway houses'
here in MI. About two dozen have signed up with the GLFA to be such, several
of them vets. If anyone has a problem finding a vet in MI, they should be
referred to the GLFA or STAR. There were vets in STAR before we were ever
legal, but now that we are, I'm finding more and more notes to find 'good'
ferret vets. Spread the word. Deborah Jeans had the list to update our
'foster home volunteers' in late Jan, and it should be updated in her newer
publishings. I'm still working on the info for MI with the GLFA and others.
I've just been contacted about a librarian in Fraser who wants to have an 'info
seminar' on ferrets. The GLFA and members ARE conducting them, and volunteers
to do this are wanted! We can use lectures in shools, or any public place like
malls where we can 'pre arrange' the presentation with posters to let people
know. If ANYONE would like to get involved, contact the GLFA at (313)587-3959
(Micki Wingate, president), (313)676-9138 (Gloria Davis, treasurer) or
(313)2874572 (Debbie Miller, editor). These are also numbers to call for
membership info!! As to me, I'm a member-but just another 'fuzzy lover', and
can't be everywhere or help everyone. However, as I explained above-you can
see what I mean by my sign off for 'ferret info, volunteer foster home/halfway
house' here in MI. If ANYONE needs info on ferrets, I've included my phone
number. I'd welcome calls for advice, and will be happy to try to steer them
to better access, even if I can't help personally. I also am and have been a
member of Legion of Superferrets for several years. Please get involved, even
if only to call your local dog pound, make an appt, and see if the director can
'steer' ferrets to you to get them out of the 'public' shelters to where they
would be safe for good care and love. It's the most any of us can do!! Once I
get a few things going, and get a talk under my belt, I'll be happy to try to
personally arrange to assist in doing talks also!!

Feel free to pass this on to other ferret lovers, with my numbers below.
Those are my e-mail addresses (for neophytes to computers) at the systems I
am on-Prodigy, Delphi, AOL, and Genie respectively. Vets and pet stores are
also welcome. I'd like to refer them to help ferrets and ferret owners.
Best,
Paul and the gang in Wayne, MI (313)728-4293 a volunteer foster
home/halfway house, and ferret care information. [log in to unmask]
