Heartworm Meds for Ferrets?

How important is it for ferrets to be on heartworm meds?  Our vet recommends
that we put our dog on it only seasonally (although it is easier just to
keep her on all year) and says that our area has a low incidence of
heartworm.  If I did put them on the heartworm medicine - what type and
dosage should I be using?  Daisy is 1-1/4 lbs, Meep 2 lbs.  And how do you
give it to them?
