A pillow case hangs on the wall next to the door in our ferret room.  Our
pillow case is basic white, and it's hung from a short length of plastic
chain that's lightly tacked to the wall.  If it were pulled, even a
little, the chain would fall, releasing the pillow case.
 
Don't use a pillow case so old you've rejected it as a covering for a bed
pillow.  Ferrets could easily rip old fabric or discover it already has
the beginnings of an escape hole.  If you don't have a sturdy extra case
to devote to being an emergency departure carrier, buy one.  You can then
select a design that lends itself to being 'wall art'.
 
In an emergency it's much easier to continue stuffing ferrets into a
pillow case than to open a carrier to add more ferrets.  You can grab the
carrier and use it to carry out things that won't try to escape - food, a
water bottle, sleep sacks, etc.
 
We have a carrier in our car at all times, sometimes several.  Where I
live fire is our biggest fear, partially due to the fact that houses are
close together and fire often spreads or at least damages adjoining
houses.
 
Some of you probably remember I say this often, but please take action to
plan for an emergency escape because you never know what might happen.  It
isn't always the result of a homeowners carelessness - a gas line could
explode and ignite your house.
 
Buy pillowcases!
