Did the ferret have raisins, grapes or currants? Each of those has
caused acute kidney failure. Animals with problems from such food items
are ferrets, dogs, and cats. Most of the documentation is in dogs,
but "Ferrets Magazine" had an excellent article by two vets who have
treated it in ferrets who were almost killed by raisins. (Remember that
ferrets DO stash things so a ferret can have a raisin stash and then
one day eat it, going over any safe amount. It may be that as few as 7
raisins could be too much for some mid-sized adult ferrets. One thing
also under consideration is that some ferrets might have an increased
genetic vulnerability to this risk.)
Good luck. We have had a ferret who survived life-threatening kidney
problems three times. It can be a long haul and lots and lots and lots
of fluid becomes important for an extended period. We much that is good
to say about IV and about sub-cutaneous fluids as well as oral.
