Read Connie Martin's post with some interest today.  She says, "An animal
is not a piece of property (despite the fact that the law in most states
consider them property) to be disposed of in any manner the "owner" sees
fit."
 
Seems there are two questions here.  One is property and one is disposal.
There is small difference in ownership and guardianship in most cases.
There are numerous groups like "Forest Guardians" who don't own the forests
they feel responsible for.  In fact, regardless of how most states look at
pets as property, there are more or less stringent and more or less
enforced laws as to the disposal of animals and any other property.
 
Please don't confuse law with personal responsibility either.  Most
communities can't afford to provide proper police protection to their
residents let alone proper protection to their
pets/animals/critters/furkids or whatever you wish to call them.  Life is
balance and propertion.  That's why Justice is always seen with a scale.
