Hi,

I'm new to this list and to the world of ferrets. But I'd like to respond
to 2 posts:

First: Someone asked about successful litterbox habits. My one ferret is a
sable female (spayed, that's a "sprite", right?). She was in a cage at a
pet store that did not have a litter box, so I wasn't sure she'd adapt to
one very well. She did. We had to come to terms about what kind of litter
to use (I didn't know to use pelleted newspaper litter for a couple of days.
I know now.) and where to put the litter box. I chose a corner for the
convenience of cleaning. She chose another corner. I moved the box. She
chose yet another spot. Since the litter box couldn't be moved there, I put
a dish of water there to discourage her. It worked. We haven't had any
"mistakes" since. In all corners of the cage I have a dish of food or a
dish of water, the litter box, or it is the corner at the bottom of the
ramp.

Second: Someone posted that they were having trouble with maggots. I have
some questions: (These may have been answered in a post from before I joined
the list. If so, I apologize.) Are you sure these are maggots? From what
kind of fly? Are they only in the cage, or actually on the ferrets? (Check
them very carefully.) Is the cage outside or in? I work with wildlife and
one of the less pleasant aspects of my work is dealing with maggots. If I
know exactly what you have, I may be able to give you some useful
suggestions.

You may want to eMail me privately to make sure I can get you a quick reply.
Just put "Ferret/Maggots" in the subject line.
