While I missed the original post I am so sorry for your loss. My little
girl Loki got herself caught one day during cage cleaning. I had them
in the upper level with the bedding stripped and left only the litter
box and a bed in there for them. Loki got her toe stuck in the shelf
jumping down and was dangling there. I was awake so I heard her
screaming thankfully. The poor girl wet herself and was terrified but
she made it. I still have and love the ferret nation cage and wouldn't
want any other kind. The problem with my situation was I didn't leave
she shelves covered or it would have never happened.

Another option is to contact Karen from Ferret Affair to replace
midwest's shelving with a safe option.
