Sounds like classic adrenal gland problem.  See a good vet.  My Felix is
getting surgery soon for the same thing - according to my vet (Gandalfi of
Castro Valley Companion Animal hospital, California; he has a superb
reputation) adrenal gland tumors rarely spread to other organs, so the
situation is usually treatable.
